The short version
- An SEO checklist covers six areas: set-up and tracking, keyword research, on-page SEO, technical SEO, local SEO, and content and links.
- For a small business, the biggest wins are usually clear page titles, pages that answer real searches, a complete Google Business Profile and a few relevant links.
- Tick items off below as you go. Your progress is saved in this browser, so you can come back to the 33-point list any time.
What should be on an SEO checklist?
An SEO checklist is a list of the tasks that help search engines find, understand and rank your pages. Work through it once for your whole site, then use the on-page section every time you publish a new page.
Set-up and tracking
Keyword research
On-page SEO
Technical SEO
Local SEO
Content and links

Where should a small business start?
If you only have an afternoon, do these first, in this order: verify Google Search Console and submit your sitemap, fix your page titles and first sentences for your five most important pages, complete your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers, and ask three happy customers for a review. Then add one genuinely useful page a month, such as a guide, a price explanation or a free tool.
Free tools that answer a common question (a calculator, a template, a checklist like this one) tend to earn links and repeat visits on their own. They are some of the best pages a small business can publish.
What is on-page SEO?
On-page SEO is everything on the page itself: the title, description, headings, text, images, internal links and structured data. It is the part you control completely, and for a small site it usually matters more than anything technical.
What is technical SEO?
Technical SEO makes sure search engines can reach, read and index your pages quickly: sitemaps, robots rules, HTTPS, mobile layout, speed, redirects and canonical tags. Most website builders handle the basics, so check for problems in Search Console rather than starting from scratch.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO helps you show up for searches with a place in them, or searches made near you, like "bakery near me". Your Google Business Profile, consistent contact details and reviews do most of the work, backed by pages on your site for each service and area.
Does SEO still matter with AI search?
Yes. AI answers in search engines and chat assistants draw on pages that are easy to find and easy to quote. The same habits help both: answer the question in the first sentence, use question headings, keep facts current with dates and sources, and add structured data.
Selling on Etsy or another marketplace?
Marketplace search works differently from Google: titles, tags, attributes and listing quality matter most. See our Etsy SEO guide. If you're just getting started, our guide on how to start a small business and our list of digital products to sell may help too.

Frequently asked questions
What is an SEO checklist?
A list of tasks that help search engines find, understand and rank your website: set-up and tracking, keyword research, on-page SEO, technical SEO, local SEO, and content and links.
How long does SEO take to work?
New pages on a new site often take weeks to months to rank well, depending on competition. Fixing titles and indexing problems on existing pages can show results sooner.
Can I do SEO myself?
Yes. Most of this checklist needs no special skills: Google Search Console, clear titles and headings, useful content, a complete Google Business Profile and asking for reviews and links.
What is the most important part of SEO?
Pages that answer what people actually search, written clearly. Technical fixes and links help, but they can't make up for a page that doesn't match the search.
How often should I check my SEO?
Look at Search Console monthly for errors and new search terms, run through the on-page checks for every new page, and review your most important pages every few months.
Is local SEO different from regular SEO?
Local SEO adds your Google Business Profile, consistent contact details, reviews and pages for each area you serve. The on-page and technical basics are the same.
