How much does Etsy take from a sale?
On a typical US sale, Etsy takes about 9.5% of the order plus $0.45: the 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% payment processing fee, plus the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 processing fee. Both percentages are charged on the shipping you charge as well as the item price, and payment processing is also charged on the sales tax Etsy collects.
Worked example: a $25 item with $5 shipping
- Transaction fee: 6.5% × $30 = $1.95
- Payment processing: 3% × $30 + $0.25 = $1.15
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Total Etsy fees: $3.30, so you receive $26.70
- After a $5.00 label and $6.00 of materials, you keep $15.70

The fixed $0.45 hurts most on cheap items: on a $10 item it adds 3 points to your fee rate. Offsite Ads roughly doubles or triples the fees on any single order, which is why low-margin products need a price that can survive an ad sale.
Etsy Offsite Ads: how the fee works
Etsy advertises listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Bing and other sites. If a shopper clicks one of those ads and buys anything from your shop within 30 days, you pay an Offsite Ads fee on that order. According to Etsy's help center:
- 15% of the order for shops that have never made $10,000 in a 365-day period. These shops can opt out.
- 12% once your shop has made $10,000 or more in any 365-day period. From then on, Offsite Ads are required for the life of the shop.
- Capped at $100 per order, however large the order.
- You only pay when an ad leads to a sale. There's no charge for clicks or views.

On a product with a 20% margin, a 15% Offsite Ads fee takes most of your profit. Before you leave Offsite Ads on, work out your profit on an ad sale for each product, and raise the price or opt out (if you still can) where it goes negative.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee covers the shipping and gift wrap you charge, and payment processing covers the whole order. Two practical effects:
- Free shipping doesn't avoid fees. If you roll the shipping cost into your price, the fees are the same, because the order total is the same.
- Charging more than the label costs you is taxed by fees too. Keep shipping close to your real label cost.
How to keep more of each Etsy sale
- Price for an Offsite Ads sale, not just a normal one, so an ad-driven order still makes money.
- Bundle small items or set a minimum order value. The fixed $0.45 matters most on cheap sales.
- List in your bank account's currency to avoid the 2.5% conversion fee.
- Log Etsy Ads and Etsy Plus as expenses, since they're billed separately from order fees.
- Track real profit per product, including materials, packaging and labels, not just the payout.
