Alibaba Trade Assurance: what it covers, what it does not, and how to file a claim

Alibaba Trade Assurance is the order protection Alibaba.com gives buyers who pay on the platform: it ties the supplier’s ship date and product quality promises to your payment. Here is what it covers, what it leaves out, how to use it and how to file a claim.

The short version

  • Alibaba Trade Assurance is Alibaba.com’s order protection for buyers. When you pay on the platform for an eligible order, it helps you claim a refund if the supplier ships late or the goods do not match the contract.
  • It protects what is written in the order contract: the ship date, product specifications and quality. Vague orders are hard to claim on.
  • It is a dispute process with limits, not insurance. Coverage depends on the supplier, the order and the payment route, and claim windows are short.
  • Pay on the platform, keep all messages in Alibaba chat, and pair it with a pre-shipment inspection for anything that matters.

What is Alibaba Trade Assurance?

Trade Assurance is a free Alibaba.com buyer protection program that covers eligible orders paid through the platform, tying the supplier’s promises on shipping date and product quality to your payment. In Chinese it is 信用保障 (xìnyòng bǎozhàng). As of October 2026, Alibaba describes it as protecting buyers against missed shipment deadlines and products that do not match the agreed quality, and it says Alibaba will help reach a resolution, including refunds or compensation, when a supplier does not perform.

The key phrase is “eligible orders”. Not every supplier offers it, and not every order qualifies. Look for the Trade Assurance mark on the supplier or product page, and confirm it appears on your order before you pay.

What does Trade Assurance cover?

SituationHow Trade Assurance can help
Supplier ships lateYou can claim against the shipping date written in the order, and Alibaba describes delay compensation for protected orders.
Order never shipsYou can ask for a refund if the order is not shipped.
Goods lost or missingAlibaba lists missing orders among refund reasons.
Goods defective or not as agreedYou can claim when products are defective, incorrect or damaged compared to the order contract and specifications.
Payment released too earlyOn eligible payments, Alibaba describes holding the payment and releasing it to the supplier after you confirm receipt (check how this works for your payment method).

Some protected orders also come with extra services in eligible countries or for eligible products, such as local returns or after-sales support. These vary, so read the order page rather than assuming.

What does Trade Assurance not cover?

Know the limits

Trade Assurance is not traditional insurance. It is a rules-based process: you must follow it on time, with evidence, inside Alibaba’s system. Anything agreed on WeChat, WhatsApp or email may not count.

How do you place an order with Trade Assurance?

  1. Find protected suppliersLook for the Trade Assurance mark and the supplier’s protection details. Check the supplier’s profile with our guide to the Alibaba Verified Supplier badge, which is a separate thing.
  2. Agree the details in Alibaba chatSettle the price, quantity, specifications, packaging, Incoterm and ship date in writing. Our supplier message templates help you ask for the right details.
  3. Create the order through the platformAsk the supplier to issue an order (or use Alibaba’s order tools) so the order page shows the products, price, trade terms and ship date.
  4. Read the contract before payingCheck every field: quantity, unit price, specifications, ship date, trade terms. If something is missing, ask the supplier to amend the order.
  5. Pay on the platformUse a payment method offered for that order. Do not pay a different bank account because the supplier asks you to.
  6. Track, inspect and confirmArrange an inspection before shipment if the order is important. Confirm receipt only after you have checked the goods.

Which payment methods and fees apply?

As of October 2026, Alibaba lists payment options for protected orders such as credit and debit cards, digital wallets, bank transfers and, for eligible buyers, flexible payment plans. Which ones you see depends on your country, the order size and your buyer account.

On fees, Alibaba presents Trade Assurance as a buyer protection and does not state a separate Trade Assurance charge on its main page. What you do pay depends on the payment method: card fees, bank transfer fees on your side, and possible currency conversion costs. We could not confirm a single current fee figure at Alibaba’s official pages, so check the final checkout total for your order before you pay. Our guide on how to pay Chinese suppliers compares the cost and protection of each payment route.

How do you file a Trade Assurance claim, and how long do you have?

The process follows the same outline as Alibaba’s help pages: open the order, apply for a refund or claim, negotiate with the supplier in the platform, then escalate to Alibaba to decide if you cannot agree.

  1. Collect evidence at oncePhotos and video of the goods and cartons, packing list, the order contract, chat history, tracking records, and any inspection report.
  2. Open the claim from the orderGo to your orders in your Alibaba account and apply for a refund or dispute for the affected order, stating the reason and what you want (refund, replacement, compensation).
  3. Negotiate in the platformKeep every message in Alibaba chat. Reply promptly and be specific.
  4. Escalate if there is no agreementAsk Alibaba to review the case. Alibaba decides based on the contract, chat records and evidence submitted.
  5. Follow the decisionIf you are refunded, the money returns through your payment method, which can take time depending on the method.

Time limits matter. Claims for late shipping start once the agreed ship date has passed, and quality claims must be made within a limited window after delivery. We could not confirm the exact number of days on Alibaba’s official help pages, and the limits can differ by order and payment method, so read the terms on your order page the day it arrives, and do not wait.

Is Trade Assurance better than paying by wire off-platform?

Trade Assurance (on platform)Wire to supplier’s bank (off platform)
Contract on recordOrder page and chat saved on the platformWhatever you keep yourself (PI, contract, emails)
Recourse if it goes wrongClaim process run by AlibabaAsk the supplier, your bank or a lawyer; recalls are rarely possible
Payment costDepends on method chosenBank fees, usually lower on large amounts
Supplier flexibilitySupplier must offer and support itAny supplier, often with a proforma invoice
Fraud exposureLower if you stay on the platformHigher: a wrong or changed bank account is hard to recover

Wires are normal for repeat orders with suppliers you trust and have audited. For a first order with a new supplier, the platform route usually gives you more leverage. See how to pay Chinese suppliers for the full comparison.

Should you combine Trade Assurance with an inspection?

Yes, for anything beyond a small sample order. A claim is only as strong as the evidence behind it. A third-party inspection before shipment (a quantity, workmanship and spec check against your order) gives you a dated report you can attach to a claim, and it catches problems while the goods are still at the factory. Ask for the inspection standard in the order, and for who pays and when. For larger or repeat suppliers, a factory audit checks that the supplier can do the job in the first place.

Write supplier messages that put it in writing

Frequently asked questions

What is Alibaba Trade Assurance?

Trade Assurance is Alibaba.com’s buyer protection for eligible orders paid through the platform. It helps buyers claim a refund or compensation if the supplier misses the agreed ship date or the goods do not match the order contract.

Is Trade Assurance free for buyers?

Alibaba presents Trade Assurance as a buyer protection without a separate charge on its main page, but payment methods can carry their own fees, such as card or bank charges. Check the total at checkout.

Does Trade Assurance protect me if I pay by wire transfer outside Alibaba?

No. Protection applies to eligible orders paid through the platform. A direct bank transfer to a supplier after a chat is not covered, so check the order and payment screen before you pay.

Is Trade Assurance the same as the Verified Supplier badge?

No. Verified Supplier relates to checks on the supplier’s company, while Trade Assurance is order protection with limits that depend on the supplier and order.

How long do I have to file a Trade Assurance claim?

Claims for late shipping start after the agreed ship date, and quality claims have a limited window after delivery. Exact periods can differ, so read the terms on your order page and act as soon as the goods arrive.

What evidence helps win a dispute?

The order contract with clear specifications, chat records on the platform, photos and video of the goods and cartons, and an independent inspection report. Claims based on spoken or off-platform agreements are much harder to prove.
