How are import taxes into Mexico calculated?
Mexican import taxes are calculated on the customs value: the goods plus international freight and insurance. A formal import pays the import duty (IGI) at the rate for its tariff code, the 0.8% customs processing fee (DTA), then 16% IVA on the value plus IGI plus DTA.
Example: US$10,000 of plastic goods from China
With US$9,000 of goods and US$1,000 of freight and insurance, the customs value is US$10,000. IGI at 25% is US$2,500, DTA is US$80 and IVA is 16% of US$12,580, or US$2,012.80. Total taxes: US$4,592.80, about 46% of the customs value. These are the calculator's default numbers.
What about courier packages?
Since August 15, 2025, courier packages from countries without a trade agreement with Mexico pay a global rate of 33.5% (it was 19%). Packages from the US or Canada pay lower rates. For larger shipments, or products with a low duty rate, a formal import can work out cheaper.
