With Shopify Payments, Shopify charges a card fee on each online order: 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced (US, as of October 12, 2026). The fee is charged on the full amount the customer pays, including the shipping you charge. On top of that you pay the monthly plan.

Example with the calculator's default numbers: a US$38 product with US$5 shipping is a US$43 order. On Basic the card fee is 2.9% of US$43 + US$0.30 = US$1.55. After a US$12 product cost and a US$6 label you keep about US$23.45 per order. At 100 orders a month that is about US$2,345, minus the US$39 plan: about US$2,306 a month.
Which Shopify plan is cheapest for you?
Each step up lowers the card rate by 0.2 percentage points but costs more per month. Grow costs US$66 a month more than Basic on monthly billing, so it only pays for itself once you take about US$33,000 a month through Shopify Payments (66 ÷ 0.002). Advanced needs about US$147,000 a month more than Grow to pay off its extra US$294. With yearly billing the gaps are US$50 and US$220, so US$25,000 and US$110,000. What if you don't use Shopify Payments?
You can use another payment provider, but then Shopify adds its own fee on each order: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, on top of what the provider charges. Pick "Another payment provider" in the calculator and enter your provider's rate.
Is Shopify cheaper than Etsy?
Per sale, usually yes, because Shopify takes no commission on top of card fees, while Etsy charges listing, transaction and processing fees on every order. But Shopify charges a monthly plan and brings no buyers: you have to send every visitor yourself.
