The short version

  • Paid Claude plans have two limits: a session limit that resets every 5 hours, and weekly limits. No plan is unlimited.
  • Pro gives at least 5 times the Free plan's usage, about 45 short messages per 5 hours. Max 5x gives 5 times Pro, and Max 20x gives 20 times Pro.
  • Check what you have left at Settings > Usage. The Claude apps and Claude Code share the same limit.
  • Long chats, big files, Research, web search and extended thinking use up limits fastest. Anthropic's own tips are below.

How do Claude usage limits work?

On a paid Claude plan you have a session limit, which resets every 5 hours, and weekly limits, which reset once a week. Anthropic added weekly limits for Pro and Max in August 2025 and said at the time that they would affect fewer than 5% of subscribers. The limits are shared: claude.ai, the desktop app and Claude Code all draw from the same allowance.

Usage is not counted in messages. It depends on how much work each message takes, so a short question costs far less than a long chat with files attached.

What uses moreWhy
Long conversationsThe longer the chat, the more each new message uses
Large attachmentsFiles are read in full, and again on later turns
Research, web search, connectorsEach tool call adds work
Extended thinking and higher effortMore reasoning per answer
Bigger modelsThe most capable models use limits faster
Code, file creation, browsingMulti-step tasks run many steps per request

Per dollar, Max 20x is the best deal on paper: $200 for 20 times Pro's session usage is $10 per "Pro's worth", against $20 on Pro and Max 5x. It only pays off if you actually hit your limits most days.

How do you check your Claude usage?

Go to Settings > Usage in Claude. It shows a progress bar for your current session and for your weekly limits, each with the time it resets. Check it before you start a big task, so you do not run out halfway through.

What happens when you hit the Claude usage limit?

Claude stops replying until the limit resets. You have four options:

  1. Wait for the resetThe session limit resets every 5 hours and the weekly limit once a week. Settings > Usage shows the exact reset times.
  2. Turn on usage creditsPro and Max users can turn on usage credits at Settings > Usage. You pay for extra use at standard API rates and can set a monthly spending cap. On Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, an owner turns this on under Organization settings > Usage.
  3. Buy a usage bundlePrepaid bundles (Pro, Max and Team) cost less than their face value. See the table below.
  4. Upgrade your planMoving from Pro to Max 5x gives 5 times the session usage.

If a single chat gets too long, Claude may ask you to start a new one. That is a conversation length limit, not your usage limit: start a fresh chat and paste a short summary of where you were.

How do you make your Claude usage limit last longer?

These come from Anthropic's own best-practice article, in the order that saves the most:

Restart without losing context

Before you end a long chat, ask Claude for a 5-line summary of the decisions and open questions. Paste it into a new chat to keep going at a fraction of the usage.
