The short version
- OEM (original equipment manufacturer): you bring the design and specs, the factory makes it. You own the design.
- ODM (original design manufacturer): the factory already has the design. You pick it, customize it and put your brand on it.
- ODM is usually faster, cheaper and lower-MOQ to start. OEM gives you a product nobody else can sell, at a higher upfront cost.
- Most small importers start with ODM plus light customization, then move to OEM for a hero product once it sells.
What is the difference between OEM and ODM?
The difference is who owns the design. With OEM, the design is yours and the factory builds to your specs. With ODM, the design belongs to the factory, and you buy a version of it under your brand. Alibaba.com's own seller guide puts it this way: with OEM, "the buyer retains full ownership of the design and intellectual property", while with ODM "the supplier typically retains ownership of the core design intellectual property, though this can be negotiated."

What does OEM mean in manufacturing?
OEM means you supply the product design and the factory manufactures it for you. You send drawings, a sample or detailed specifications, and the factory builds to them. Chinese factories often call this 来图定制 (made to your drawings) or 来样定制 (made to your sample), and OEM work in general is often called 代工 or 贴牌.
If your product needs a new mold, you pay for it. Ask for a private mold (私模, sīmú) in your name, and put in writing that the mold is yours and can't be used for other buyers.
You'll also see "OEM" used for car parts, where it means genuine parts from the original automaker. That's a different meaning. This guide is about manufacturing a product to sell.
What does ODM mean?
ODM means the factory has already designed the product, and you order it with your changes: color, material, logo, packaging, maybe a small feature change. Most "customizable" listings on Alibaba are ODM. The factory uses its own public mold (公模, gōngmú), which is why the price, MOQ and lead time are lower, and why other sellers can buy the same base product.
ODM is often what people mean by private label: an existing product with your brand on it.
What about OBM and private label?
- OBM (original brand manufacturer): a company that designs, makes and sells under its own brand. When a Chinese factory says it has an OBM line, it sells its own brand too.
- Private label: a retail term, not a factory one. It means a product sold under your brand, made by someone else. It's usually ODM, sometimes OEM.
- White label: a generic product many sellers rebrand with little or no change. Closest to plain ODM.
Should you choose OEM or ODM?
Choose ODM when
- You're testing whether a product sells
- Your budget is a few thousand dollars, not tens of thousands
- Branding, color and packaging are enough to stand out
- You need stock in weeks, not months
Choose OEM when
- The product has proven demand and you want to own it
- You have a real design improvement competitors can't copy
- You can fund molds, samples and a larger first order
- Protecting your design matters more than speed

- Sign an NNN agreement (non-disclosure, non-use, non-circumvention) written for China before sharing drawings.
- Put mold ownership in the contract and the proforma invoice: who paid, who owns it, and that it's used only for your orders.
- Register your trademark in the countries where you sell, and consider registering it in China too.
- Split sensitive parts across suppliers if the design is easy to copy.

What should you ask a supplier about OEM or ODM?
- Is this your own design (ODM, public mold) or would it be made to our design (OEM, private mold)?
- What can we customize at your standard MOQ: color, material, logo, packaging?
- What's the MOQ and unit price at 500, 1,000 and 3,000 units? (See MOQ meaning.)
- For OEM: mold cost, mold ownership, sample lead time and how many sample rounds are included.
