What does MOQ mean?
MOQ stands for minimum order quantity. It's the smallest number of units a supplier or manufacturer will accept in one order. If a supplier's MOQ is 500 pieces, they won't produce or sell you 200, at least not at their normal price.
MOQ can be counted in pieces, sets, pairs, meters, kilograms or cartons. Some suppliers use a minimum order value (MOV) instead, such as $1,000 per order. In Chinese, MOQ is 起订量 (qǐdìngliàng) or 最小起订量, and Chinese suppliers will understand "MOQ" in English too.
MOQ in manufacturing
In manufacturing, MOQ comes from the fixed cost of setting up a production run. Before the first good unit comes off the line, the factory has to:
- set up and calibrate machines, and clean them between runs
- make or install molds, dies, screens or printing plates
- buy raw materials, which often come with their own minimums (a roll of fabric, a dye lot, a batch of resin)
- train workers on the line and run test pieces
Those costs are roughly the same whether the factory makes 100 units or 5,000. Spread over 100 units they make each unit expensive; spread over 5,000 they barely show. The MOQ is the point where the run becomes worth the factory's time.
MOQ in supply chain
Across a supply chain, MOQs stack up. A factory's MOQ is often set by its own suppliers' MOQs: a garment factory can't sell you 100 shirts in a custom color if the mill only dyes fabric in 1,000-meter lots. The same happens with printed packaging, zippers, labels and electronic components.
For your business, MOQ affects three things:
- Cash flow. A higher MOQ ties up more money in stock before you've sold anything.
- Inventory risk. More units means more to store and more to lose if the product doesn't sell.
- Reorder timing. If you can only buy in blocks of 1,000, you need to reorder earlier and forecast further ahead. Our Inventory Tracker calculates reorder dates from your sales speed and supplier lead time.
MOQ on Alibaba
On Alibaba, every product listing shows a minimum order, such as "Min. order: 500 pieces", usually next to a tiered price table where the unit price drops as quantity rises. A few things to know:
- The listed MOQ is a starting point. Suppliers, especially trading companies, often accept less for a first order, usually at a higher unit price.
- Custom orders have higher MOQs. The MOQ on a listing is often for the standard product. Adding your logo, custom packaging or a new color usually raises it.
- Check what the MOQ counts. Per order, per style or per color can make a big difference.
- Ready-to-ship listings are usually stock products with low MOQs, sometimes one unit, but little or no customization.
- 1688.com, Alibaba's domestic Chinese site, often shows lower MOQs and prices, but suppliers there sell to Chinese buyers, usually in Chinese, and most don't ship abroad without an agent.
Why suppliers set an MOQ
- To cover setup costs. Machine setup, molds and test runs have to be paid for.
- Because of their own material minimums. They can't buy half a roll of fabric or 200 custom-printed boxes.
- To keep the line efficient. Short runs mean more changeovers and less output per day.
- To filter buyers. Small orders take nearly as much communication and paperwork as big ones. An MOQ helps a supplier focus on buyers who are likely to reorder.
- To make a profit. Many factories work on thin margins per unit and need volume to make an order worthwhile.
Knowing the reason helps you negotiate. If the MOQ is about materials, offer to use materials they already have. If it's about setup, offer to pay the setup fee.
Types of MOQ
| Type of MOQ | What it means | How it might look in a quote |
|---|---|---|
| Per order | The minimum for the whole order, across all products. | "MOQ 1,000 pieces, can mix styles" |
| Per style or SKU | Each product or design has its own minimum. | "500 pieces per style" |
| Per color or size | Each color or size needs its own minimum, often because of dye lots or material runs. | "300 pieces per color" |
| Material MOQ | The minimum the factory's own supplier sets, such as one roll of fabric or one print run of boxes. | "Custom printed box MOQ 1,000" |
| Minimum order value (MOV) | A minimum spend rather than a unit count. | "Minimum order $1,000" |
| Carton MOQ | You must order in full cartons. | "Sold in cartons of 50" |
What does "no MOQ" mean?
"No MOQ" means there's no minimum: you can order any quantity, even a single unit. It's common with:
- products the supplier already has in stock
- print-on-demand and dropshipping suppliers
- wholesale marketplaces selling generic goods
The trade-off is price and flexibility. No-MOQ products cost more per unit and usually can't be customized beyond, at most, a simple logo. They're good for testing demand or ordering samples, not for building a brand's core product.
What does "low MOQ" mean?
"Low MOQ" is relative to the product. For a custom injection-molded part, 1,000 units can be low. For printed T-shirts, 50 might be. Suppliers that advertise low MOQs usually keep them low by:
- using stock fabrics, colors and existing molds
- adding your logo or label to a standard product
- fitting small orders into gaps between larger production runs
Low MOQ suppliers are useful when you're starting out, but compare the unit price and quality against higher-MOQ factories. Once your product is proven, moving to a larger order with a better unit price can transform your margin.

Suppliers negotiate MOQs all the time. These tactics work best when you're polite, specific and clear about what you're asking for.
1. Ask what the MOQ is based on
Before you negotiate, find out why the MOQ is what it is. Is it per style or per color? Is it set by materials or by the production line? The answer tells you which of the tactics below will work.
2. Offer a higher unit price for a smaller order
This is the simplest trade. A supplier that won't make 300 units at the 1,000-unit price might make them at 10 to 20% more. Do the math on your landed cost first.
3. Propose a trial order
Call it a trial order (试单, shì dān) and explain what happens next: "If this sells, we plan to reorder around 1,000 units." Only say it if it's realistic. Suppliers remember.
4. Use existing materials, colors and molds
Choosing a stock color or an existing mold removes the material minimum and setup cost, which is often the real reason for a high MOQ.
5. Reduce variations
If the MOQ is per color or size, start with fewer colors or sizes. Or ask whether you can mix colors or styles to reach the MOQ (混色 or 混款).
6. Be flexible on lead time
Offer a longer lead time so the factory can fit your order into another customer's run of the same material.
7. Pay the setup or tooling cost
If a mold or plate is the problem, offer to pay the mold fee (开模费) separately. Agree in writing that you own the mold.
8. Make yourself an easy customer
Send clear specs, reply quickly, pay the deposit on time, and write in the supplier's language. A complete request for quotation shows you're serious and makes it easier for them to say yes.
9. Find the right supplier
If a large factory won't move, try a smaller factory or a trading company that consolidates orders. They're often set up for smaller quantities.

What does MOQ stand for?
MOQ stands for minimum order quantity: the smallest number of units a supplier will accept in a single order. In Chinese it's 起订量 or 最小起订量.
Is MOQ negotiable on Alibaba?
Often, yes. The MOQ on an Alibaba listing is the supplier's starting point, not a fixed rule. Many suppliers will accept a smaller first order if you pay a higher unit price, use their existing colors and materials, or place a trial order with clear plans to reorder. MOQs for fully custom products are harder to move.
What is a good MOQ for a first order?
One you can afford to lose. A first order tests the product, the supplier and the market, so keep it as small as the supplier will allow at a unit price that still leaves you a profit. Check your landed cost per unit at the smaller quantity, since freight and fixed fees are spread over fewer units.
What does MOQ 1 mean?
MOQ 1, or no MOQ, means you can order a single unit. It usually applies to products the supplier already has in stock, or to print-on-demand and dropshipping. Expect a higher unit price and little or no customization.
What is the difference between MOQ and MOV?
MOQ is a minimum number of units. MOV is a minimum order value, like $500 or $1,000 per order. Some suppliers use one, some use both, and some let you mix products to reach an order value.
Does MOQ apply per color or per order?
It depends on the supplier, so always ask. "MOQ 500" can mean 500 per order, 500 per style, or 500 per color. Asking "请问起订量是按每个款式还是每个颜色算的?" (is the MOQ per style or per color?) avoids a nasty surprise.
