Low MOQ manufacturers in China: how to order small

Want a small first order from a Chinese manufacturer? Minimums can often flex if you ask the right way. Here is why they exist, five asks that can lower them, the wording in English and Mandarin, and a worked example of what a small run costs.

The short version

  • Minimums exist for good reasons: setup time, material sold in rolls or batches, and the cost of stopping a line. Asking politely for a smaller run is normal.
  • Stock (现货, xiànhuò) products with your logo usually have far lower minimums than fully custom (定制, dìngzhì) products.
  • Five asks can lower a minimum: use an existing design, use stock materials and colors, mix colors or sizes, accept a higher unit price, or pay a setup fee.
  • Expect to pay more per unit on a small run. Plan for sample, then pilot, then full order.

Why do minimums exist?

A minimum order quantity (MOQ, 起订量, qǐdìngliàng) is not a supplier being difficult. Each new run needs machines set up, materials bought (fabric comes in rolls, plastic pellets in bags, printed boxes in print runs) and staff scheduled. Below a certain quantity, that fixed cost is spread over too few pieces for the order to make sense. Our guide to what MOQ means covers the types of minimums in detail.

Seen that way, the question is not "how do I avoid the MOQ?" but "how do I make a small order worth the supplier's time?"

Stock vs custom: the biggest lever

Stock with your logoFully custom

Typical minimumLowerHigher
Setup costsSmall (for example, a print plate)Can be large (for example, a mold)

General patterns; actual minimums depend on the product and supplier.

On 1688 and Alibaba, many listings for stock goods show small minimums. Custom versions of the same item usually need more.

Five asks that can lower the minimum

  1. Use an existing designPick a design the supplier already makes and add your logo or label.
  2. Use stock materials and colorsChoose colors and materials the supplier already holds, so nothing has to be bought just for you.
  3. Mix colors or sizesAsk if the minimum can be split across colors or sizes (混批, hùnpī, mixed batch).
  4. Accept a higher unit priceOffer to pay more per piece on the first order.
  5. Pay the setup costOffer to pay a setup fee, such as a plate fee (版费, bǎnfèi) or mold fee (开模费, kāimú fèi), so the run makes sense.

How to ask: wording in English and Mandarin

ChinesePinyinEnglish
能做小批量吗?Néng zuò xiǎo pīliàng ma?Can you do a small batch?
最少能做多少个?Zuìshǎo néng zuò duōshao gè?What is the smallest quantity you can make?

颜色和尺码可以混批吗?Yánsè hé chǐmǎ kěyǐ hùnpī ma?Can we mix colors and sizes in one order?
第一单单价高一点也可以接受。Dì-yī dān dānjià gāo yìdiǎn yě kěyǐ jiēshòu.We can accept a slightly higher unit price on the first order.
如果卖得好,我们会返单。Rúguǒ mài de hǎo, wǒmen huì fǎndān.If it sells well, we will reorder.

Only say you will reorder if you mean it. Suppliers remember. More phrases are in our guide to messaging a Chinese supplier in Mandarin.

Expect a higher unit price on small runs

Fixed costs are shared by fewer pieces, so the price per piece goes up. A worked example with illustrative numbers (not a quote):

OrderUnit priceSetup feeTotalCost per piece
1,000 pieces$2.10$0$2,100$2.10
300 pieces$3.40$60$1,080$3.60

Illustrative numbers for a simple printed product, to show the math. Real prices depend on the product, materials and supplier.

In this example the small order costs $1.50 more per piece but ties up about half the cash, which is often the right trade when you are testing a product. Run your own numbers with our landed cost calculator and profit margin calculator.

Which product types tend to flex?

There are no guarantees, but in general:

Sample, pilot, full run

  1. SampleOne or a few pieces to check quality and fit. Expect to pay a sample fee (样品费, yàngpǐnfèi).
  2. Pilot orderA small paid run to test the market and the supplier's consistency.
  3. Full runOnce it sells, reorder at a quantity that brings the unit price down.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find low MOQ manufacturers in China?

Start with suppliers who sell the product as stock, on 1688 or Alibaba, and ask for your logo on an existing design. Ask several suppliers the same question about their lowest quantity.

How do I ask for a lower MOQ in Chinese?

Ask 能做小批量吗? (Néng zuò xiǎo pīliàng ma?), which means: Can you do a small batch? Then ask 最少能做多少个? (What is the smallest quantity you can make?).

Will a lower MOQ cost more per unit?

Usually yes. Fixed costs like setup are shared by fewer pieces. A small first order often costs more per piece but much less in total.

What does 混批 mean?

混批 (hùnpī) means a mixed batch: splitting the minimum across colors, sizes or styles. Many 1688 sellers state whether they allow it.

Is it rude to ask for a lower MOQ?

No. It is a normal question. Be clear about what you can offer, such as a higher unit price or using an existing design.
