How does Whatnot's commission work?

Whatnot sets your tier from your total sales across all categories in the last 28 days. Your rate on each sale then depends on its category: live sales use the show's category, and marketplace sales use the product's category. Tiers reset every 28 days, and moving up a tier lowers the rate for the next period, not the current one. Whatnot says this structure took effect for existing sellers on September 21, 2026.

Does Whatnot charge fees on shipping and tax?

Partly. The commission is calculated on the item's sale price only, so buyer-paid shipping and tax are excluded. The processing fee is calculated on the total the buyer pays, including shipping and tax, plus the fixed $0.30. For example, on a $50 item with $8 shipping, processing is 2.9% of $58 plus $0.30, which is $1.98, not $1.75.

What the seller keeps before the cost of the item, US standard fees as of October 2026, assuming the buyer pays $8.00 shipping and no sales tax. Whatnot is shown at the starting 8% tier: commission on the item price, processing on item plus shipping, and the buyer pays the label. For eBay and Mercari the fees include shipping and your label costs the same. On Poshmark the buyer pays the label. The highest amount for each price is in bold.

At the starting tier, Whatnot keeps more than eBay and Poshmark at every price here, and edges out Mercari on small sales, while Mercari pulls ahead from about $50 up under these assumptions. Higher Whatnot tiers (lower commission) tilt this further. The bigger difference is how you sell: Whatnot is live selling, so demand depends on show attendance, not search.
