Delivering a digital file costs nothing per copy: there is no stock, no packaging and no shipping label.
What does Etsy take when a digital product sells?
Three fees, all on the item price because there is no shipping: a 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing of 3% + $0.25 in the US, and a new $0.20 listing fee, because a sold listing auto-renews so it can sell again.

The fixed $0.45 is what hurts cheap downloads: on a $5 file it is 9 points of your price on its own. Bundling small files into one listing at a higher price keeps more of each sale.
Which costs are easy to miss?
- Offsite Ads. If a buyer arrives through an Etsy ad on another site and buys within 30 days, Etsy adds 15% of the order (12% once your shop has made US$10,000 in a year), capped at US$100. Under US$10,000 you can opt out; above it, the ads are required for good.
- Renewals on listings that don't sell. Every listing renews at US$0.20 every four months if you leave auto-renew on. Ten listings that never sell cost US$6 a year.
- Currency conversion. Etsy charges 2.5% if you list in a different currency from your bank account. List in your bank's currency.
- Etsy Ads. Optional ads inside Etsy search, charged per click from a daily budget you set.
- Regulatory operating fee. Shops in some countries, such as the UK and France, pay an extra percentage.
How should you price a digital product for these fees?
Price so that a sale still pays when Etsy's fees and an Offsite Ads fee land on the same order. Etsy's percentages come to 9.5%, plus 15% for an ad sale, and the fixed fees to $0.45, so a download needs to sell for at least $0.60 just to cover Etsy on an ad sale, before your time and any software you pay for.
