How much does a $25 sale net on each marketplace?
Here is the same sale on all nine platforms: a $25 item, $5 shipping charged to the buyer, a card payment and a US seller. "You keep" is what is left after the platform's fees and a $5 shipping label, before what you paid for the item.

How do we calculate the index?
- One sale, nine platforms. A $25 item, $5 shipping charged to the buyer, paid by card, sold by a US seller in a standard category with standard fees. No sales tax, no ads, no boosts, no store subscriptions, no promotions.
- Fees are platform fees only. We add every fee the platform charges on that sale: commission or final value fee, payment processing, per-order and listing fees. We leave out optional extras (Etsy Offsite Ads, eBay Promoted Listings, Depop boosting), currency conversion and payout fees.
- Shipping is neutral. Where you buy the label, the $5 the buyer pays covers it. Where the buyer pays the platform for the label (Poshmark, Vinted, Whatnot), the $5 never reaches you. Either way, "You keep" equals $25 minus fees, so the platforms compare like for like. Fees that are charged on shipping (Etsy, eBay, Mercari, Depop, Facebook, Amazon, Whatnot processing) are charged on the $5.
- Amazon is the referral fee only. We use the 15% referral fee that applies in most categories. The selling plan ($39.99 a month Professional, or $0.99 per item sold on Individual) and FBA fulfillment fees depend on how you sell, so they are not in the index. - Every rate comes from our own fee guide for that platform, which cites the platform's official fee page and the date we checked it (shown in the table). Where a platform's help page is not public, the guide says so.
- Updated monthly. We re-run the index at least once a month and whenever a platform changes its fees, and we log each change in our marketplace fee tracker.
What should you know about each platform?
- Vinted. The buyer's Vinted fee on a $25 item is 5% + $0.70 = $1.95, paid on top of the price. Vinted says the fee usually follows that formula and can vary with the item and order. Optional Bumps cost extra.
- Depop. Depop removed its selling fee in the US and UK in 2024. Boosted listings add 12% if they sell (listings boosted from March 23, 2026).
- Mercari. No payment processing fee since January 6, 2025. Cashing out by direct deposit is free; Instant Pay costs $3.
- Facebook Marketplace. Local pickup sales have no fee. Meta's help pages for the shipped fee load only when you're logged in, so confirm the rate in your seller settings.
- Whatnot. Since September 21, 2026, the commission falls across seven tiers based on your last 28 days of sales and depends on the category; 8% is the starting tier in most categories. Coins start at 4%.
- Etsy. If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, Etsy adds 15% of the order (12% for shops over $10,000 a year), capped at $100: $4.50 more on this sale. New shops may also pay a one-time set-up fee.
- eBay. The 13.6% is also charged on sales tax, which this index leaves out. The per-order fee is $0.30 on orders of $10 or less. Your first 250 listings a month are free.
- Amazon. Referral rates run from about 8% to 17% by category, with a $0.30 minimum. A Professional seller also pays $39.99 a month; FBA adds a fulfillment fee per unit.
- Poshmark. Sales under $15 pay a flat $2.95 instead of 20%. In Canada: C$3.95 under C$20 and 20% above, plus GST/HST on the fee.

Vinted, because it charges the buyer instead of the seller: on a $25 sale you keep the full $25. Among platforms that charge sellers, Depop is the cheapest in our index at $1.44 on a $25 sale with $5 shipping.
Which marketplace takes the most from a $25 sale?
Poshmark, at $5.00 (20% of the sale price). Amazon's referral fee ($4.50) and eBay ($4.48) come next, and Amazon's figure leaves out the selling plan and FBA fees.
How much does Etsy take from a $25 sale?
$3.30 on a $25 item with $5 shipping in a US shop: the $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 payment processing, all on the $30 order. An Offsite Ads sale adds 15% of the order.
Why is shipping included in the fee calculation?
Most platforms charge their percentage on the shipping the buyer pays too, so the same $5 shipping changes the fee. We charge the buyer $5 on every platform and subtract a $5 label, so the comparison stays fair.
