The short version
- Taobao is China's biggest shopping site. Prices are in yuan and most sellers only ship inside China, so from abroad you usually buy through a shopping agent or a forwarder's China address.
- A full English version of the Taobao app only exists in a few Asian markets (Singapore and Malaysia since 2024, Hong Kong since 2025). Everywhere else, use browser translation, image search or an agent's English site.
- You can pay with a Visa or Mastercard through Alipay, or pay the agent in your own currency.
- Budget for duty: the US has no duty-free allowance left for China parcels, Canada's is CA$20, Mexico charges 33.5% on courier parcels from China and the EU adds €3 per item type plus VAT since July 1, 2026.
Can you use Taobao in English?
Yes, but only partly: Taobao has a full English app interface in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, and buyers everywhere else use translation tools or a shopping agent. Taobao launched its first English interface in Singapore in September 2024, then added Malaysia and, in January 2025, Hong Kong. In the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and Latin America there is no full English version in 2026. These options work instead:
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Browser translation | Open taobao.com in Chrome or Edge and translate the page. Product titles and reviews come out rough but readable | Browsing and comparing prices |
| Image search | In the Taobao app, tap the camera icon (拍立淘, “snap and search”) and upload a photo of what you want | Finding the same item from cheaper sellers |
| Shopping agent site | Paste a Taobao link into an agent's English site; they show the item in English and buy it for you | Buying from the US, Canada, the UK or Europe |
| Taobao app in English | Only in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, with local prices and English checkout | Buyers in those markets |
Does Taobao ship to the USA and Canada?
Most Taobao sellers only ship to addresses in China. Taobao's own consolidation service, which collects your orders in a Chinese warehouse and ships them abroad together, covers a short list of countries that changes often, so check the shipping settings in the app before you count on it. For the US, Canada, the UK and most of Europe, the practical routes are:
| Route | Who buys | Who ships abroad | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopping agent | The agent, from your link | The agent, after combining your orders | A service fee on top of item prices, commonly around 5 to 10% |
| Freight forwarder | You, on your own Taobao account | The forwarder, from their China warehouse address | You deal with sellers and refunds yourself, in Chinese |
| Taobao consolidation | You | Taobao's logistics partner | Only in some countries; check the app |
Choose an agent that shows you photos of every item when it reaches the warehouse (QC photos) and lets you return it to the seller before it leaves China. Returns after that are rarely worth the shipping.
How to buy from Taobao, step by step
- Find the itemSearch in English with browser translation, or better, use image search. Searching in Chinese finds far more: paste the Chinese name from a product photo or a translation tool.
- Check the sellerPrefer Tmall stores (天猫, brand or official shops) for branded goods. On Taobao shops, look at shop age, the seller's rating, how many sold per month (月销) and reviews with photos (带图评价).
- Check size and specsChinese sizes usually run one or two sizes smaller than US or European sizes. Read the size chart (尺码表) in centimeters and compare with something you own.
- Order through your routePaste the link into your agent, or buy it yourself and ship to your forwarder's China address. Domestic shipping inside China is often free or a few yuan.
- PayPay the agent in your currency, or add a Visa or Mastercard to Alipay and pay in yuan. Your card may add a foreign transaction fee.
- Check the QC photosWhen the item reaches the warehouse, check it against the listing. Ask for a return or exchange now if it's wrong.
- Combine and shipWait until several orders arrive, then ship them together. Pick a line by weight and speed, and ask whether duty is included or billed on delivery.
What does a Taobao order really cost?
The item price is only the start. Add these before you decide a deal is worth it:
- Item price in yuan, plus your card's foreign transaction fee or the agent's exchange rate.
- Shipping inside China to the agent or forwarder: often free, sometimes a few yuan.
- Agent or forwarder fees: service fee, storage after a free period, extra photos or packing.
- International shipping, charged on actual or volume weight, whichever is higher. Bulky, light items cost more than you expect.
- Duty and tax in your country: see the table below.
| Where you live | Duty and tax on a parcel from China (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|
| United States | No de minimis: every parcel pays duty. The normal rate for its HTS code, plus Section 301 (7.5% or 25% for most goods), plus a 12.5% tariff since July 24, 2026, plus any fees. Estimate it with our China tariff calculator. |
| Canada | Free up to CA$20. Above that, duty for the tariff item plus GST or HST. |
| Mexico | Courier parcels from China pay a flat 33.5% rate. See our Mexico tariffs guide. |
| European Union | €3 customs duty per item type in parcels under €150 (July 1, 2026 to July 1, 2028), plus import VAT. |

Taobao has millions of honest sellers, but also copies of branded goods. Importing counterfeits is illegal in the US, Canada, the EU and Mexico, and customs can seize them without a refund. Pandabuy, once a popular shopping agent, shut down in 2024 after a police raid linked to counterfeit goods.
- Buy branded goods only from Tmall flagship stores (旗舰店) or the brand's own shop.
- Be wary of a famous brand at a fraction of its normal price.
- Pay only through Taobao or your agent, never by bank transfer to a seller who contacts you directly.
- Keep the chat history and order screenshots until the item arrives and is right.
Batteries, power banks, liquids, powders, cosmetics and food are restricted on many shipping lines. Ask your agent which line can carry them before you buy.
