When is Chinese New Year 2027?
Chinese New Year 2027 is on Saturday, February 6, 2027. It is the first day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar, also called the Spring Festival (春节, Chūnjié) or Lunar New Year. Because the lunar calendar follows the moon, the date moves every year: in 2026 it was February 17, and in 2028 it will be Wednesday, January 26.
We checked every date on this page against the Hong Kong Observatory's 2027 calendar conversion table (as of October 16, 2026). These are the key dates of the 2027 season:
| Date | Day | Lunar date | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 30, 2027 | Saturday | 12th month, day 23 | Little Year (小年, Xiǎonián) in northern China: houses are cleaned for the new year |
| January 31, 2027 | Sunday | 12th month, day 24 | Little Year in much of southern China |
| February 4, 2027 | Thursday | 12th month, day 28 | Start of Spring (立春, Lìchūn), a solar term |
| February 5, 2027 | Friday | 12th month, day 29 | New Year's Eve (除夕, Chúxī): the reunion dinner |
| February 6, 2027 | Saturday | 1st month, day 1 | Chinese New Year's Day: the Year of the Goat begins |
| February 13, 2027 | Saturday | 1st month, day 8 | A traditional day for shops and businesses to reopen |

New Year's Eve is often called 大年三十 (dà nián sānshí), the 30th of the 12th month. In 2027 the 12th lunar month has only 29 days, so the Eve falls on the 29th (Friday, February 5).
What Chinese zodiac animal is 2027?
2027 is the Year of the Goat (羊, yáng). The Chinese word 羊 covers both goats and sheep, so you will also see it called the Year of the Sheep or the Year of the Ram. It is the same sign. The Goat is the eighth of the 12 zodiac animals and follows the Horse (2026).
Each year also has an element. The year name 丁未 (dīng wèi) pairs the heavenly stem 丁, which belongs to Fire, with the earthly branch 未, the Goat. That makes 2027 the Year of the Fire Goat. The same combination comes around every 60 years: the last Fire Goat year was 1967 and the next is 2087.
Born in a Goat year? Check the start date: the zodiac year begins on Chinese New Year, not January 1. Someone born on January 20, 2027 is still a Horse.
| Goat year | Chinese name | Element | Began | Ended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1943 | 癸未 | Water | February 5, 1943 | January 24, 1944 |

| 1967 | 丁未 | Fire | February 9, 1967 | January 29, 1968 |
| 1979 | 己未 | Earth | January 28, 1979 | February 15, 1980 |
| 1991 | 辛未 | Metal | February 15, 1991 | February 3, 1992 |

| 2015 | 乙未 | Wood | February 19, 2015 | February 7, 2016 |
| 2027 | 丁未 | Fire | February 6, 2027 | January 25, 2028 |

How long does the Chinese New Year holiday last?
Traditionally, the celebration runs for 15 days, from New Year's Day on February 6 to the Lantern Festival on February 20, 2027. Counting New Year's Eve, that is 16 days. Official days off are much shorter, and they depend on where you are:
| Where | 2027 days off | Status on October 16, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Mainland China | Not yet announced | The State Council publishes the next year's holiday schedule, usually in late October or November. In 2026 the Spring Festival holiday ran 9 days, February 15 to 23. |
| Hong Kong | Saturday, February 6; Monday, February 8; Tuesday, February 9 | Announced. The second day falls on a Sunday, so the fourth day is a holiday instead. |

In mainland China, the official break is often paired with make-up working days on nearby weekends. Do not book travel around a guessed schedule: wait for the State Council notice.

What are the main Chinese New Year traditions?
- Cleaning before the new year. Families clean the house around Little Year to sweep out the old year, then avoid sweeping on New Year's Day.
- Spring couplets (春联, chūnlián). Red paper strips with good wishes go up on both sides of the front door.
- Reunion dinner (年夜饭, niányèfàn). On New Year's Eve, February 5, 2027, families gather for the biggest meal of the year. Dumplings (饺子, jiǎozi) are a classic in northern China.
- Red envelopes (红包, hóngbāo). Money in red envelopes, given mostly by older relatives to children and unmarried young people. Digital red envelopes on phone apps are now common too.
- Fireworks and firecrackers. Traditionally lit at midnight to scare away bad luck. Many Chinese cities now limit or ban them, so local rules vary.
- Lantern Festival (元宵节). On February 20, 2027, the 15th day, people hang lanterns, solve lantern riddles and eat sweet rice balls (汤圆, tāngyuán).
For a classroom or event, red and gold decorations, paper lanterns, and the greetings above are simple, accurate ways to mark the day.
Do businesses in China close for Chinese New Year?
Yes. Offices, many shops and most factories in China close or slow down around the holiday, and many factories stay closed or short of staff for weeks, because workers travel home to other provinces. If you buy from Chinese suppliers, the deadlines come much earlier than February.
